Joey Heatherton was born on September 14, 1944, as Davenie Johanna Heatherton in Rockville Centre, New York, New York City to Ray Heatherton who held a career as a Broadway musical theater performer and television star. Her mother whom she was named after Davenie was also a Broadway performer who met her father on the stage in the theater play “Babes in Arms”.

She was nicknamed Joey right from her childhood. The name is derived from her first name Davenie and her middle name she has a brother named Dick who made his living as a DJ.

Joey Heatherton schooled at a Catholic grade and high school named Saint Agnes Academy. When she was six years of age, she started studying ballet dancing, imitating her mother until she combined it with modern jazz dance, voice, and dramatics under the tutelage of George Balanchine after which she started her career as a child actress.

Being raised in the family of entertainers gave Joey a soft landing in the show business. She made her acting debut in the famous children’s show of the late 1950s “The Merry Mailman” created by her father.  By the time she turned 15, she has become a member of the original Broadway production of “The Sound of Music”.

Joey sparkled in the “The Perry Como Show” as a teenager who was having a crush on Perry Como in 1959. She ended that year by releasing her first single “That’s How It Goes”/”I’ll Be Seeing You” but the song did not cause a stir nor a ripple effect. She still didn’t give up on her singing career.

The 1960s proved to be more eventful in her career as she landed the role of Karen Emerson on CBS television drama “Route 66”. She was also in two episodes of the primetime medical drama “The Doctors and the Nurses” first as Janet Clark and as Ellen Denby.

She activated the other side of her in the show business which is dancing and performing in musical comedies, she was heavily criticized because of her dancing outfits which many considered too provocative to viewers. But she never gave a reply back as she moved to perform live in Bob Hope’s touring USO troupe, entertaining the GIs with her singing, dancing and of course her outfits that have been termed provocative.

She was in the film “Twilight of Honor” as Laura Mae Brown and “My Blood Runs Cold” as Julie Merriday. In the early 70s, her career began to decline but she managed to bounce back into the limelight in some films like “The Ballad of Andy Crocker” as Lisa and “The Happy Hooker Goes to Washington” as Xaviera Hollander, a call girl.

During her prime, she was nominated for The Golden Laurel Award for Top Female New Face and Golden Globe Awards for Most Promising Newcomer.

Marriage

Joey’s first attempt in matrimony was sour to the point that she never remarried. She married Lance Rentzel, a former football wide receiver for Dallas Cowboys in April 1969. The union was going perfectly well until when her husband was arrested a year later for molesting a minor. Lance pleaded guilty to the charges and promised he would undergo psychiatrist treatment, however, Joey filed for divorce because of his behavior as it dented her image and went against everything she believed in.

The divorce process was concluded in 1972 and Joey never remarried except she married her career again in order to salvage what has been left of its ruins.

The same month and year, she was arrested and charged with interfering with a government agent’s duties and disturbing the peace after she allegedly slapped and pulled the hair of a clerk at Manhattan’s U.S. Passport Agency office. She was later acquitted of those charges in September 1986.

On August 30, 1986, she was arrested for stabbing her former manager and ex-boyfriend Jerry Fisher with a steak knife during an argument in Hillcrest, Rockland County, New York. At the time of her arrest, police didn’t know who she was so she gave them her purse to verify her ID and a foil packet with less than a gram of cocaine was found inside her purse.
