Gary Cole is the son of a school administrative assistant Robert Cole while her mother Lois Cole worked as director of finance. Gary was born in Park Ridge, Illinois but was raised in Rolling Meadows with her elder sister Nancy.

Gary Cole was married to actress Teddi Siddall. Teddi appeared on many episodes in “Grey’s Anatomy”. They wedded on March 8, 1992.
