Yolandi Visser has made a name as an actress, singer, rapper and a film director. She plays in the big league of Hollywood. She also plays on the turf of controversies. With Visser, there are a lot of things to be said. We have gathered all the details about her you need to know.
Yolandi Visser: Birth and Early Life
Anri du Toit known as Yolandi Visser was an adopted child of a clergyman. She was born in the East Coast of South Africa, Port Alfred to be precise. Yolandi has a blood brother who was also adopted by the clergyman and his wife too. She was raised in a conventional way, under the watchful eyes of his foster father.
When she turned six years old, she was sent to a missionary school St. Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls, after which she gained admission into Lady Grey Arts Academy. However, Yolandi soon became a completely different person; troublesome and always in loggerheads with people, including her parents.
When she began to live life the way she wanted, she met a guy named Markus in Pretoria, a DJ and music producer. Yolandi was not into music as of then but soon picked interest as Markus would mix electronic beats while she lends her voice to the mix. What started as a fun led to a discovery of her talent. Yolandi Visser was born on December 1, 1984. She is 35 years old.
Yolandi Visser: Career
Her career took a dramatic turn when she left Pretoria for Cape Town to find a rhythm for her career that is just unfolding. Luckily for her, she met Watkin Tudor Jones, who goes by the stage name Ninja. Ninja listened to the songs she made with Markus and picked interest in her. Together, Ninja brushed up her musical talent and even taught her how to rap as they went on to release some songs and albums under The Constructus Corporation and MaxNormal.tv.
In 2008, Yolandi convinced Ninja on the need to form their own band, and together, they formed the band “Die Antwoord” alongside producer DJ Hi-Tek (Justin de Nobrega). Ninja continued to believe Yolandi despite her weirdness in some occasions and together they took the music genre Zef rap-rave, an Afrikaans style hip-hop, to mainstream.
They released their first album “$O$” in 2009. It was free to air album as anyone could download it without purchase. One of their songs in the album “Enter the Ninja” garnered so much attention when the music video went viral. Prior before the music video was shot, she asked Ninja to cut off the sides of her hair and bleached her hair and eyebrows white.
As they continued to go deeper into mainstream entertainment, they established their own record label “Zef Records” in 2011, dropping Interscope Records which released their first album. Their second and third studio albums, Ten$Ion and Donker Mag were released under their new record label, as well as their other studio albums.
Yolandi has also appeared in some films. In 1998, she appeared in the film “Family Picnic” in a minor role. She was also in the 2004 film “Spook Asem”. In 2011, she appeared the psychological South African horror film “Tokoloshe”. She was also in the short film “Umshimi Wam” alongside Ninja
Her filmography would have been longer if she had not rejected the lead role in David Fincher’s adaptation of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”. She almost turned the offer of South African director Neil Blomkamp to appear in the dystopian science fiction action film “Chappie”. She played the role of a gang member alongside Ninja. South African actor and voice artist Sharlto Copley was also in the film. The film was a relative commercial success as it grossed $102 million worldwide against a $49 million budget.

The name of their daughter is Sixteen Jones and at the age of seven, she appeared on the music video of “I Fink U Freeky”. She is a member of a band as a songwriter and singer. Yolandi also adopted a street-kid named Tokkie.
In early 2019, a video of an incidence which was believed happened in 2012 went viral in the internet, putting Yolandi and Ninja on a spotlight of drama. The video shows Yolandi and Ninja as they physically attacked gay musician Andy Butler. It was much more than a physical attack as hurled homophobic statement on Andy Butler.
