Franka Potente was born on July 22, 1974, in Münster, Germany to a medical assistant mother Hildegard and a teacher father Dieter Potente. She grew up in nearby Dülmen with her brother Steflan who was born with a sickly disposition.

After her graduation from high school, she spent some months as an exchange student in Humble, a suburb of Houston, Texas. Franka also studied at the Otto-Falckenberg-Schule, a drama school in Munich, and even made her film debut in a German production before going back to the US to study at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in New York. Her US trips weren’t all about studies as there was love in the mix. She returned to her home country and starred in a film that would clinch her her first Award.

After she starred in the film “Aufbruch” in 1990, it took her five years to appear on the screen again as she starred in “After Five in the Forest Primeval”. She was discovered by a casting agent for this role with her then-boyfriend Hans Christian Schmid directing the movie.  In the movie, Franka portrayed the role of a 17-year-old girl named Anna who, in search of freedom in an urban environment, runs away from home with a boy who has a crush on her. The film earned her a Bavarian Film Award for Young Talent in 1996.

In 1998, she established herself as one of the hottest talents in the game as she appeared in the German thriller film “Run Lola Run”. She portrayed the character of a woman named Lola who needs to obtain 100,000 Deutsche Mark in twenty minutes to save her boyfriend’s life. Franka also appeared in the romantic comedy film “Am I Beautiful” a film that focuses on people having trouble with love and identity.

In the year 2000, Franka starred in the German-language horror film “Anatomy” as a medical student who wins a place at an exclusive Heidelberg medical school, where she uncovers a gruesome conspiracy by a secret Anti-Hippocratic society. The year 2000 was eventful in her career as she also starred in another blockbuster film “The Princess and the Warrior” where she played the character of a psychiatric hospital nurse who, after a near-death experience, enters into a relationship with an anguished former soldier.

Her first English language role film came in the biographical crime film “Blow” as an airline stewardess who starts working with cocaine smuggler George Jung. Her intentional audience began to grow as she appeared in the “The Bourne Identity” in 2002.  Franka starred in BBC America’s ‘Copper”, as a shrewd Prussian businesswoman and the madam of a brothel, in 1860s New York City during the American Civil War. She has been nominated for an Australian Film Industry Award for Best Lead Actress in the Australian Drama film “Romulus, My Father”. The actress has an amazing filmography.

Franka Potente is married to American actor Derek Richardson who is known for his roles in “Men in Tree” and “Anger Management”. They tied the knot in 2012 and together they have two daughters Polly and Georgie.

Franka had an American lover during her teenage days. She once disclosed in an interview. “I had an American boyfriend, went to football games and to my American prom. I was so serious about my American boyfriend, I brought him back to Germany with me to visit my parents. They were horrified.” She also dated Eric Melvin from NOFX.
