Megalyn Echikunwoke was born on May 28, 1983, in Spokane, Washington, the USA to Onigwe Versato Echikunwoke, a survivor of the Nigerian-Biafran civil war who immigrated to the United States carrying a gunshot wound. Megalyn’s paternal grandfather was an Igbo chief in southeast Nigeria. Her last name “Echikunwoke” means a leader of men among men in Igbo land. Her mother’s name is Anita Laurie, an American of English, Irish and German descent.

She has three siblings, a brother named Miki and a sister named Misty. When she was four years old, her father who was studying for a law degree at Spokane died of liver cancer. Originally, he had been battling Hepatitis B, one of the relics of the war he had fought for his Igbo tribe against the Nigerian forces. After her father’s demise, her mother moved the family Navajo Indian reservation in Chinle, Arizona, where she was raised.

During an arts-related summer camp at the age of 14, she was discovered by a Hollywood agent after performing in a theater production.

Megalyn made her motion picture debut in 1999 as Lauren in the film “Funny Valentines” this was after she appeared as a guest in Steve Harvey’s show in 1998. In 2001, she appeared as a coffee house singer in 65 episodes of the television series “Spyder Games” on MTV. The series focuses on a wealthy video game-producing family and the unexpected murder of the patriarch, Boris Carlisle, who is in control of the company.

Between 2001 and 2002, she appeared in the action drama television series “24” as Nicole Palmer the daughter of the President on Fox Network. The series won various awards over its eight seasons, including Best Drama Series at the 2004 Golden Globe Awards and Outstanding Drama Series at the 2006 Primetime Emmy Awards.
