Sue Perkins: Five Important Facts

Sue Perkins captures any audience with her jokes and an amazing sense of humor. The comedienne and TV presenter also writes but making people laugh is what she loves the most.

Born to Bert Perkins and Ann Perkins on 22 September 1969 in East Dulwich, London, England. Sue has a sister by the name of Michelle Perkins. Her father was a local car dealer and her mother’s occupation was of secretary.

She has done so many works on TV, she has not escaped controversies either. Here, we bring five important facts about her career.

1. Sue Perkins earned an English degree from the University of Cambridge

Sue Perkins attended Croham Hurst School, an independent school for girls in South Croydon Greater London. During that period, she was also a television presenter.  Sue moved to study English at New Hall at the University of Cambridge where she graduated in 1991.

She emerged as President of the Footlights while studying in Cambridge that was the same period she met Mel Giedroycin, who is now her comedy partner.

2. Sue founded the “Mel and Sue Comedy team” with Mel Giedroycin

Sue Perkins founded the show named “Mel and Sue” with Mel Giedroyc. The show was a buzz on its own and became really popular. The show also got nominated in the Daily Express as a Best Newcomers Award at the Edinburgh Festival in 1993. The show continued to air but it never got in the way of Sue, as she continued to chase her career.

After keeping fans in suspense, lightning struck twice and Mel and Sue together returned and co-hosted a show on Channel 4 entitled to Light Lunch and Late Lunch. This show ran for about one year that is from March 1997 to February 1998.  However, it never received the acclaimed success like the “Mel and Sue” comedy.  Sue got involved in several other shows where she hosted and performed many activities.

Sue is also a panel number on Radio 4’s “The News Quiz” and has made regular appearances on Radio 2’s “It’s Been a Bad Week.” She was a Judge for the 2009 Man Booker Prize and this wasn’t a surprise because she studied English at Cambridge.

There were rumors that she received a death threat on her Twitter account for hosting the show “Top Gear. The rumors died down and there was no further comment on it.

3. She was a housemate in Celebrity Big Brother 2002

In 2002, Sue appeared on the show Celebrity Big Brother in aid of four charities and they are Centrepoint, National Missing Persons Helpline, Rethink and Samaritans. She wasn’t in the show for herself but to give aid to these four charity houses.

Most times celebrities are faced with the task of helping indigent people in the society that their generosity oftentimes eats into their personal budget.  However, speaking with the media one time, Sue said she agreed to appear in Celebrity Big Brother so that people would know which one was Mel and which one was Sue.

4. Sue Perkins is a Lesbian

Sue Perkins is confident in her sexuality, unlike most closet homosexuals. Before confessing that she is a lesbian, Sue revealed that she was in a six-year relationship with a man. There are lesbians who men attractive and Sue confirms that she falls into that category.

According to “The Great British Bake Off presenter” she loved a man named Rob. She revealed further that if someone is a lesbian it doesn’t mean that she wouldn’t have feelings for any opposite gender.

But presently she is in a happy relationship with Anna Richardson. Their relation is going on smoothly. Perkins guest-conducted the London Lesbian/Gay Symphony Orchestra on 11 October 2009.

5. Sue Perkins has battled with a brain tumor

Sue has had health challenges that scared everyone, most especially her fans. “The Great Bake-off” presenter was diagnosed with a brain tumor when she was 38 years of age.  Discussing how she found out about it while presenting the BBC show, in which she ate unusual food and took medical tests to see what impact the diet had on her, the star said: “In this small, very clinical white side-room, this woman said, “Your bloods are very awry and you have a brain tumor.”

She went on to describe her the result of that test changed her as Doctors told her she can’t have babies. Could that be the reason why Sue ended her six years relationship with Rob to date Anna? We don’t really know.
