Her career started when she was a candidate for Miss Pennsylvania and a pageant judge advised her to quit school and focus on becoming a fashion model.

She heeded this advice, dropped out of school and moved to New Jersey to live with an aunt in 1977. That same year, she was signed by a modeling agency in New York City, Ford Modeling Agency.

She did most of her modeling job in Europe, living in Milan for a year and subsequently in Paris. It was while she was in Paris that she decided to switch to acting.

At the age of 20, she had her first appearance on set when she was cast in Woody Allen’s Stardust Memories for a brief role. She later had a speaking part in the horror film “Deadly Blessing” a year later and has never looked back ever since then.

The most dramatic of her personal life was the one she had with William MacDonald who was producing the film “Sliver” in which she was starring. Macdonald left his wife and proposed to Stone. The next year, the engagement was broken off and Stone returned his engagement ring through a shipping company, FedEx.

She was subsequently engaged to Bob Wagner in 1994 but this did not end in a marriage.

She married San Francisco Chronicle editor Phil Bronstein in 1998. They divorced in 2004 after they have adopted a son in 2000 of which Phil retained primary custody. In 2005, she adopted a son and named him Laird Vonne Stone. A third son Quinn Kelly Stone was adopted a few years later.
