Renee Elise Goldsberry was born on January 2, 1971, in San Jose, California, USA. Her mother, Betty Sanders, (not a sister to Bernie Sanders) worked as an industrial psychologist, while her father was an executive in the automotive industry, he also held a career as a chemist and a physicist. Renee has one older brother and two younger brothers.

Even though her family had their 9-5 jobs, they were talented in music and as Renee grew, she discovered her passion for music and acting and her parents encouraged her to pursue both vigorously. Due to the job of her father, the family moved a lot as she was raised in Houston Texas, Detroit and Michigan.

At the age of 8, her mother led her by the hand into a summer camp alongside her younger brother who was rather coy. They were enrolled in a camp at the HITS Theater in Houston taught by the legendary singer and songwriter Carolyn Frankli. This early exposure prepared Renee for greatness.

She attended Cranbrook Kingswood School, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan and proceeded to do a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from Carnegie Mellon University in 1993. Renee started off her career in the theater when she played the role of Michelle Moris in “Dreamgirls” in 1997. Between 1997-2002, she appeared as a singer on Fox’s legal comedy-drama series “Ally McBeal” in up to 43 episodes. She adapted easily to her role as she has been singing all her life. In 2001, she made her motion picture debut in the film “All About You” as Nicole Taylor.

In 2002, she appeared as Nala in the Broadway production of “The Lion King”. Renee held a stellar career in the theater appearing in  Broadway productions like “The Color Purple” “Rent” and “Good People”.

Renee originated the role of Nettie Harris in “The Color Purple”, the Broadway musical adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1982 novel of the same name. In 2015, she originated the role of Angelica Schuyler in the Broadway production of “Hamilton”. This role gave her career a major lift as she won a 2015 Drama Desk Award, the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical, and the 2016 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She also received a Grammy Award after the original cast album won Best Musical Theater Album at the 2016 Grammy Awards.

In television series, she has appeared in a number of roles. She played the role of Evangeline Williamson on ABC soap opera “One Life to Live”. She has played the role of Geneva Pine on CBS legal and political drama “The Good Wife”.
