McGraw was born on October 25, 1963, in Nicosia, Cyprus, to American parents. Her father served as a diplomat for the Agency of International Development before becoming an executive with a major hotel in Boston. Not much is known about her mother. Melinda has two elder sisters.

She attended the Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge and landed her first acting opportunity with the Boston Children’s Theater at a very tender age. Melinda had a short spell at Bennington College before enrolling at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Between 1992-1994, she played Detective Cydavia “Cyd” Madison on “The Commish”. She also appeared as Melissa Scully in four episodes of “The X-Files”. Melinda appeared in an episode of NBC sitcom “The Pursuit of Happiness”. The actress has also starred in four episodes of “Desperate Housewives” as Annabel Foster.

In 2006, she became more noticeable as she played Jane Braun, campaign advisor to Presidential candidate Arnold Vinick, in several episodes of “The West Wing” on NBC. She portrayed U.S. Attorney Valerie Por in “Close to Home”.

In 2008, Melinda played Commissioner Gordon’s wife in the hit film “The Dark Knight” Also, she had a recurring role as seductive adulteress Bobbie Barrett in the 2008 season of AMC’s ‘Mad Men”. For her role in season 2 of the series, she earned a Screen Actors’ Guild Award as part of the Best Ensemble Cast, as well as an OFTA Television Award for Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
