Matt Frewer

If you are feeling particularly nostalgic and you want to watch the ‘80s and ‘90s films, Matt Frewer has content for you. If you are also one of the new kids on the block, Matt Frewer still has contents for you. The thespian has been in the acting business for three decades with several credits in voice acting, comedy and singing. Here is everything you need to know about the actor.

Who is Matt Frewer?

Matt Frewer is the son of Captain (Ret’d) Frederick Charlesley Frewer, a Royal Canadian Navy officer who married Gillian Anne (née German). Matt was born in Washington D.C because his mother moved to the US to join his father who was transferred to the Canadian Embassy in Washington. He is a Canadian American. Matt has an older brother named Frederick Barry Frewer who also served in the Canadian Navy.

Matt was raised in cities like Peterborough, Ontario. He attended Lakefield College School where he developed passion in sports particularly in hockey. However, a terrible injury denied him the opportunity of continuing on that path. He almost studied biology in college but changed his mind and traveled to England where he studied acting at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Bristol, England. It was in England that he prepared very well for the show business, appearing in stage plays before transitioning to other genres in the entertainment business in the US and Canada.

Matt Frewer was born on January 4, 1958. He is 61 years old.

What TV role made him famous?

Ever heard of Max Headroom? The fictional artificial intelligence character, known for his wit, stuttering and electronically sampled voice. Matt Frewer played the character of Max Headroom, The World’s first computer-generated TV host. However, the computer-generated appearance of the character Max was enhanced with make-up sessions which required the actor to sit up to four hours in a chair, an experience he would later describe as grueling.

Max Headroom first appeared in the British television film “Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future” in 1985. It was a commercial success and the film went viral too, considering so many requests, the Max Headroom character got its own spinoff music video program ‘The Max Headroom Show’ in the same year.

The Max Headroom character gave birth to many spinoffs in other TV series, books, music in and outside the US.  Due to the computer enhancements enhancement required for Max Headroom character to flourish, Matt slowly withdrew himself from many spinoffs to land roles that would not station him in a chair for four hours doing makeup.

Between 1981-1991 he played the role of Mike Stratford in the CBS television sitcom “Doctor Doctor”. Following its poor ratings, the series was canceled at the end of the 1990–1991 television season. He played the role of Ed Kevin in the action film “The Taking of Beverly Hills” in 1991. As a voice artist, Matt has offered voice roles in the animated short film “Driving Mr. Pink”. He also played a voice role in the musical comedy fantasy film “Hercules” and Disney animated television series “Aladdin”.

He had a busy time in the early ‘200s appearing in many films and television series such as “Watchmen”, “Weirdsville”, “Taken” a Steven Spielberg’s miniseries productions and four hallmark productions of “Sherlock Holmes”.

He played the role of Dr. Aldous Leekie in the Canadian science fiction film “Orphan Black”. The series raises issues about the moral and ethical implications of human cloning, and its effect on issues of personal identity. In 2018, he appeared in two Netflix series “Altered Carbon” and “The Order” a horror-drama film. In 2019, he played the role of Logan on the AMC television horror series “Fear the Walking Dead” and also appeared in the fantasy television series “The Magician” as the Binder on Syfy Network.

The thespian has some awards under his sleeves like the CableACE Award for Best Music Host in the Max Headroom show. He has also won a Gemini Award for his role in the “Mentors”.

Matt Frewer is married to English Actress Amanda Hillwood who is known for her roles on the BBC TV show “A Very Peculiar Practice”.  They married in England on November 10, 1984. It must be said that while he went to England to pursue his studies, he was also looking for love. Together, they have a daughter named Scout Frewer born to them in 1996. Matt Frewer and his and wife wrote a children’s book entitled “The Fez Brothers”. They live in Ontario Canada and Marina del Rey California where they bought a house in 1989.
