The career success of Mamie Van Doren would be incomplete without mentioning Howard Hughes. Howard landed her her first movie taste and she played a role in the film “Jet Pilot” at RKO Radio Pictures. Howard continued to push her and introduced her to the who’s who in Hollywood as of then.

Such meetings provided Mamie the opportunity to work on the stage. She became a showgirl in New York City in Monte Proser’s nightclub version of “Billion Dollar Baby”. This opportunity made her be discovered by Songwriter Jimmy McHugh whose original plan was making her part of his music group. However, Jimmy decided she was too good for the chorus line and should have dramatic training. She was pushed to study drama with Ben Bard and Bliss-Hayden.

Her major career boost was when she signed a contract with Universal Studios on January 20, 1953. In 1964, Tommy Noonan convinced Van Doren to appear in the film “3 Nuts in Search of a Bolt” she obliged and even posed for Playboy to promote the film.

Van Doren released her autobiography, Playing the Field in 1987 which brought much new attention and proved to be her biggest media takeover in over 25 years. Her last screen appearance was a role in the direct-to-video drama “The American Tetralogy” in 2013.
