Her father Edwin Leon Nail worked as an airline employee while her mother Beverley travel agent and makeup artist. When her family moved to Missouri, Kate was enrolled at Hazelwood Senior High, which has since been christened Hazelwood Central High School.

She also studied at the University of Missouri where she acquired a degree in education. Kate also bagged a Master’s degree in special education from the University of Missouri and was also a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority.

Kate’s childhood dream is to become a movie star. However, the movie roles weren’t coming immediately she finished her university studies so she settled for a teaching job and was a special education teacher at Rock Bridge High School in Columbia, Missouri and Southern Boone County High School in Ashland, Missouri.

A time came when Kate realized that Missouri has given her all she could give her, she made that important career decision trip to New York in pursuit of TV roles. At first, New York did not receive her with smiles as she has to do some odd jobs to survive while waiting for a chance on the screen.

She landed a role in the soap opera “Edge Of Night” but asked the producers to take off her character when she got an opportunity to star in the film “A Little Sex”. The film gave birth to several future roles for the actress as she starred in the 1984 movie “Dreamscape”.

Same year, she landed lead roles in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”. The movie launched brought her fame and love as she met legendary Steven Spielberg who came saying the right words and love happened.

Her encounter with Spielberg sharpened her acting career and she went on to star in so many films like “Spacecamp”, “Private Affairs”, “Black Rain” and a host of others. Kate flourished on the screen and became the producer’s choice actress as she sits and waits for roles to land on her laps without a sweat.

Although her career, she only appeared in one TV series, “Black Tie Affair” before she decided to retire from acting. Her last time on the screen was in 2001 when starred in the movie “A Girl Thing” and “Due East”. Although she starred in so many movies, she never received an award. She was not into long dating as she married Robert Capshaw in 1976.  Robert Capshaw was a marketing manager and together they had a daughter Jessica Capshaw who is now a movie star. Their marriage somehow hit an iceberg and in 1980 they divorced but Kate decided to keep Robert’s last name as she had already registered it as her stage name.
