Jayma Mays was born on July 16, 1979, in Bristol, Tennessee, the United States of America to Susan Paulette and James Edwin Mays. She is of English, Scottish, Welsh and German descent. Her father was a high school teacher before picking up employment in the coal mining industry. Jayma has an older brother named Jonathan, and an older sister who goes by the name Julia.

When Jayma was four years old, she started taking piano lessons and by the age of 9, she was playing at wedding ceremonies, her first official gig. She attended Grundy High School where she was among the brightest student in her class, doing particularly well in mathematics.

She practiced drama and oral interpretations with one of her teachers at Grundy High School during which she started picking up interest in acting. She soon got a job at a local radio station where she read obituaries.  Jayma received an associate’s degree from Southwest Virginia Community College and later enrolled at Virginia Tech but had to leave after a year to pursue theater studies at Radford University, where she graduated in December 2000.

Jayma Mays made her acting debut in 2004 when she appeared in the American sitcom “Joey” as Molly. The film is a spinoff of “Friends”. The same year, she played the role of a salesgirl on HBO’s television comedy-drama series “The Comeback”. These two appearances were just minor roles but they were enough to motivate her.

In 2005, she appeared as Cynthia in the psychological thriller film “Red Eye” starring Rachel McAdams, Cillian Murphy, and Brian Cox. The film tells the story of a hotel manager trapped in an assassination plot by a terrorist while aboard a red-eye flight to Miami. It received positive reviews and did well at the box office. However, Jayma did not really play a major role in it.

Jayma made an appearance in an episode of HBO television drama series “Six Feet Under” as Donna. Between 2005-2013, she appeared in two episodes of CBS sitcom “How I Met Your Mother”. Jayma continued to appear in side roles both in films and television series as she waited for her big break to come.

In 2006, Jayma played the character of a patient suffering from the black plague in the medical drama television series “House” on Fox Network. From playing the role of a patient, she portrayed the character of a nurse in the film “Flags of Our Fathers”. Jayma appeared as Charlie Andrews on NBC science fiction television series “Heroes”. The series tells the stories of ordinary people who discover that they have extraordinary abilities to prevent catastrophic futures. Season one received positive reviews but other seasons received harsh reviews. Despite the mixed reviews, the series was nominated for various industry awards.

In 2009. Jayma played appeared on Fox Network musical comedy-drama series “Glee” as Emma Pillsbury, the school’s mysophobic guidance counselor who has feelings for Will Schuester. Jayma was in 61 episodes of the series until it ended in 2015.

She has appeared in the music video “Awakening” of Switchfoot in 2007. Between 2015-2018, she played the character of Dulcinea in the computer-animated web television series “The Adventures of Puss in Boots”. Jayma has been nominated in various award categories. In 2009, she won the Screen Actors Guild Awards for an Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series “Glee”.
