Hector Elizondo was born in New York on December 22, 1936, to Martin Echevarria Elizondo, a notary public and accountant, and Carmen Medina. His parents migrated from Puerto Rica to New York City in search of greener pastures. Hector was raised alongside his sister named Emma on the Upper West Side of New York.
Hector did not waste time in showcasing his talent to the world. At the age of 10, he joined the Frank Murray Boys’ Choir when he was 10 years old after he discovered his singing talent. This prompted his parents to enroll him at The High School of Music & Art, now known as Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. He also attended another public high school where he played basketball and baseball to the level he was scouted by both the San Francisco Giants and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Hector Elizondo made his acting debut in 1963 when he appeared in the film “The Fat Black Pussycat” in an uncredited role. He also played a role in the off-Broadway show “Kill the One-Eyed Man”. In1968, he received a major boost in his career when he portrayed the role of “God” in the play “Steambath” which fetched him an Obie Award.
His acting career took another dimension when he started appearing in TV series and motion pictures. In 1971, he played the role of Vivian in the black comedy-drama film “Born to Win”, a film title that would later have a meaningful impact in his life.
In 1975, he portrayed the character of a Puerto Rican widower in the television series “Popi” on CBS. The show ran for 11 episodes and was short-lived. Soon, Hector started making friends in the acting industry and one of them is film director Gary Kent Marshall who admired his acting talents and secured him a role in the comedy film “Young Doctors in Love”. It was an opportunity to impress his new admirer, and he gave nothing short of a masterpiece. His relationship with Gary Kent Marshall blossomed as Gary always selected him to appear in any film he directed. Hector made up to 80 appearances in Gary’s films.
Hector is also a voice artist. He played the voice of Bane in the film “Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman”. Hector is popularly known by most of his fans as Dr. Philip Walters on CBS medical drama television series “Chicago Hope” of which he appeared in up 141 episodes.

Hector first became a father when he was 19 years of age during his sophomore year in college. He married the mother of his son named Marie Rivera and after a year they divorced and he gained full custody of his son, Rodd who was born on September 5, 1956.
In 1963, he married Marie Mandry and they divorced a year later. On April 13, 1969, he married for the thing but this time to an Emmy Award-winning actress, photographer, and publisher Carolee Campbell. Carolee is known for her works in the films “This is My Son” and “The Doctors”.
In 2017, Hector lost his son Rodd at the age of 60.
