Dana is the granddaughter of the American comic publisher Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson the founder of DC comics. She graduated from Friends Seminary High School in New York City in 1978.

In 1990, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson starred alongside Jim Metzler and Vernon Wells in the film “Circuitry Man”, a post-apocalyptic science fiction film directed by Steven Lovy, where she protrayed as Lori who attempts to smuggle contraband drugs from Los Angeles to New York City with the aid of bio-mechanical Android.

In 1993, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson joined the cast of the film “Tombstone”, a Western film directed by George P. Cosmatos, which was released by Hollywood Pictures and grossed 56.5 million dollars in domestic ticket sales alone. In the film, she played the role of Mattie Blaylock the wife of a retired peace officer Wyatt Earp.

She had the recurring role in the television series as Angela Collette the mother of Adrianne Palicki. From 2014 to 2015, Dana played the role of Beverly O’ Connor (sister of Deacon Clayborne) in the 12 episodes of Nashville.

In 2013, she played the role of Malvia in the film Winter in the blood which was written and directed by the brothers Alex Smith and Andrew J. Smith. She also starred in the film Miss Arizona, where she played the role of Maybelle.
