Claressa Shields is an American professional boxer and mixed martial artist, born in Flint, Michigan, United States of America on March 17, 1995. She is currently 26 years old.

Claressa Shields: Background – childhood, education

She was born as Claressa Maria Shields to Bo Shields and Marcella Adams. She grew up with her siblings Briana Shields, Artis Mack and Disable Lewis in the rough neighbourhood of Flint in Michigan State.

For Claressa, childhood wasn’t in any way rosey. Her father was imprisoned when she was barely two years old and her mum was battling drug problems then. As the eldest of her siblings, she had to sit up for her siblings and become the elder sister they needed her to be. It was their grandmother and another aunt who provided the much-needed support.

By the time she was a teenager, she was taking care of her younger siblings feeding them and getting them ready for school.

Her father was released when she was nine. She once stated having to move 11 different homes in just 12 years, while managing to go through highschool at the same time and graduating with honours.

Claressa Shields: Career

Claressa got interested in  boxing after being inspired from the stories of Muhammad Ali’s daughter, Laila Ali from her father who had also been a boxer who performed in underground leagues.

At the age of eleven, she already had her plans cut out as she began training at “Berston Field House” in Flint. Eventually, she met her future coach Jason Clutchfield there.

Early enough, she pursued her passion headlong for the kill and became a two-time Junior Olympic Champion. Following the championship she won Olympic Gold Medals and World Boxing Championship.

In 2011, the player participated in National Police Athletic League Championship. The athlete won easily and named top overall fighter. After the tournament, she became eligible for United States Olympic Trials. In the Olympic trials, she defeated Franchon Crews-Dezurn, the world champion of 2010. The female boxer also defeated Andrecia Wasson and Pittsburgh Tika Hemingway to win middleweight class.

At the 2012 Olympics in London, she became the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing. She held a record of 26 – 0 until the 2012 World Championships in China, where she lost her only match prior to the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

In 2015, she won titles at the Women’s boxing in the Olympics and the Pan American Games.

In  2016, the undefeated boxer turned to pro. The first match of her was against Franchon Crews-Dezurn. She won the match by unanimous decision. On March 10, 2017, the next match of Shields was with Szilvi Szabados for the North American Boxing Federation middle, and she won the title. She headlined the Detroit Brawl. She won the match by decision.

In 2018, she retained her WBC and IBF titles. She also won the WBAN Super Middleweight title after defeating Tori Nelson. She later won the World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation Middleweight belts when she fought Hanna Gabriels. She then started training with John David Jackson and lost eight pounds from her initial one hundred and sixty eight pounds, hence, she was pronounced Female Fighter of the Year by Boxing Writers Association of America.

Recently, Claressa faced countless number of criticism following a lost match on 28th October.

She had lost her second bout that Wednesday night to Abigail Montes of Mexico who rallied to win the three-round bout by taking her to the mat in each of the final two rounds and unveiling a flurry of punches in the final 30 seconds.

Trolls took to social media to dish out critical comments and throw shades at her. Although she got encouragements and support from the rest.

Jake Paul, a YouTube star and pro fighter who she once criticized in the past called her “a loser” with a “prima donna attitude” and went ahead to say on Twitter that “the fake always get exposed… she’s never been a big draw and unfortunately for her will never be.”

But, her true fans who believe in her as the undisputed Queen of Boxing encouraged her to keep her head up and stay strong.

In 2017, the athlete received the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Sports Award for the biggest powerhouse. She inducted into the USA Boxing Alumni Association’s Hall of Fame. She won several other awards for her performance in the movie.
