There were 20 housemates in total in the fifth series of Big Brother Naija where they were observed by television viewers 24 hours a day and each week, one or more housemates were voted to be evicted by the general public/ housemates eviction vote. Some housemates who were considered favorites to stay in the house left early but Lucy survived many eviction Sundays to the joy of her fans and the annoyance of her haters until it happened. Here is everything you need to know about her journey in the house.

BBN Lucy: Age and early life

Big Brother Nigeria’s Lucy Edith Essien was born in Cross River State in 1990. At the age of 13, life made her an orphan which made her start learning how to navigate the chopper waters of life very early. She attended the Federal Government Girls’ College, Calabar between 2003 and 2007, after her secondary school graduation she worked briefly at Cocoa Products Store with her SSCE certificate as a sales representative.

She got admitted to Cross River University of Technology, Calabar (CRUTECH) but left school in her 100 level due to funds. Lucy later returned to school to complete her studies. As an undergraduate studying Elementary Education and Teaching, she did a mandatory for 6 months teaching practice at Immaculate Conception Primary and Secondary School as an elementary school teacher. Lucy graduated with a second class upper division from the faculty of education. She is 30 years old.

Career Before Big Brother Naija

If hardwork had a face, it would certainly look like Lucy. The entrepreneur cum-reality star started fending for herself very early in life. Lucy picked a job as a loan offer at Calabar Microfinance Bank immediately after her university graduation. She was using the job to pass time so it seems as she only worked there for four months before she resigned and moved to Abuja for her compulsory one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

While in Abuja, she landed a role as the office manager of Dejavu Home Cinema and Interior Finishing, a company specialized in building and setting up private cinemas in residential homes. While she was doing this job in Abuja, she started a business Lucianas Grill, selling grilled fish and roasted plantains. Lucy left Abuja after she completed her National Service and moved to Lagos.

Relocating to Lagos, Lucy quickly adapted to the ever-changing megacity and continued her grilling business. Luckily for her, she secured a job as a project and social media manager for Rubitec Nigeria Limited, a renewable energy company located in Ikeja, Lagos. She soon left this role to join Reddington Multi-Specialist Hospital, Ikeja GRA as a medical secretary, her last job before becoming a housemate in the Big Brother Naija Season 5.

BBN Lucy: Time In The House

Lucy entered the Big Brother Naija House as the second oldest housemate after Trikytee. She described herself as someone who believed in fairytales, however, what grabbed viewers’ attention most was when revealed that she considered not falling pregnant after what she has been through as her one of her biggest achievements. Of course, for someone with this kind of intro, viewers expected ‘content’ and Lucy served it right from the beginning.

On day 8, week two of the show, she emerged as the new Head of House HOH after the reign of Nengi Hampson. She picked Prince as her deputy as they both had immunity but there was no eviction that weekend. Some housemates found her reign very tough, branding her as one who is authoritative.  As masks continued to fall off in the house, Lucy had a fight with Nengi. It was a heated fight as both housemates said terrible things to each using their bodies as major talking points. During their argument, Nengi referred to Lucy as an Amoeba, and overage Old Cargo while Lucy fired back by calling everything in Nengi’s body fake. It was this fight that seemed to earn Lucy loyal fans who felt embarrassed that Nengi insulted Lucy by stating she is very old, a privilege many young people no longer have. This fight started the era of 30-yish women voting in support of their Queen who was attacked.

In the house, she became close friends with Ka3na, the friendship they shared in the house was deep that when Ka3na left the house, Lucy had it a bit rough trying to get closer to other housemates who according to her words don’t seem to understand her. Praise became her friend and favorite person in the house after Ka3na left. With eyes on the 85 million prize, Lucy continued to put in her best in arena games and in Wedger challenges. Then she got into a fight with another housemate Erica. Lucy insinuated that Kiddwaya controlled Erica when she was Head of House. However, her comment didn’t sit well with Erica who fired back at her before they resolved their differences. Other housemates like Kiddwaya and Neo described Lucy as someone who was difficult to with.

Eviction

Lucy was evicted the day Erica Nlewedim was disqualified. Immediately Ebuka called her name, she exited the house, turning down hugs and handshakes with the final word “it was nice doing business with ya’ll’.
