Alexx Ekubo: How Old, Relationship, Career, Full Facts

Nigerian Actors
Alexx Ekubo

Alexx Ekubo is an actor who has grown to become the actor, sometimes as a member of the tag-team with IK Ogbonna, who is known as a player and/or a lover boy or as a butt of standup comedian’s examples of Nollywood shortcomings without directly pointing Ebuko out as a bad actor for he is not.

The first time I saw Ekubo on screen was on Youtube. He was featured as the title character of Yemi Alade’s “Johnny” and his looks and the mannerism of his character who gave Uche belle and promised to marry Nene left a lasting impression on me. Perhaps this music helped cement Alexx Ekubo’s character, if not person, as a ladies man or lover boy in Nigerian pop culture.

How much of Ekubo do you know? Here is everything you need to know about the actor, model, and socialite.

How old is Alexx Ekubo?

Alexx Ekubo sometimes (mis)spelled Alex was born in April 1986. He was born Alexander Ekubo-Okwaraeke in Port Harcourt to Mazi Ekubo, an oil marketer, whom Alexx was named after and his wife Janet Ekubo-Okwaraeke, a fashion designer. Alexx grew up with his parents and three siblings in Port Harcourt, Kano, and later Lagos.

For education, he attended Federal Government College, Duara which happens to be the home town of a certain Buhari. He has an extensive higher education as he studied Mass Communication at Calabar Polytechnic, then law at the University of Calabar. He is said to have obtained a theatre arts degree at the same university in 2015 (circa).

Alexx Ekubo is from Arochukwu in Abia State. Looking at the sleek Ekubo, you won’t guess that his Arochukwu ancestors made a name for themselves in precolonial Igboand as a warlike group with the capacity to decipate and enslave. The Aro confederacy was so strong that they resisted the British and earned their place as one of the few groups in Nigeria to inflict the British with the highest number of casualties during the British occupation of the Niger Area.

Alexx Ekubo is 34 years old.

Career

Alexx Ekubo’s career began in 2010 during the Mr Nigeria pageant organized by the Silverbird Group. Think him the most handsome man in the world how much you want, there are other handsome men, and there are people who think other handsome men are better looking than Ekubo. And it was so in 2010 when Kenneth Okolie was chosen as Mr Nigeria. Alexx came second.

Having tested fame, Alexx didn’t turn back as he went on to become an actor. Or, actually expand his acting deeper as he was an actor even before he hit the Mr Nigerian stage. In fact, his first movie can be traced back to 2005.

As with scores of actors today, Ekubo had his teething stage of acting in Africa Magic timeless drama “Tinsel”. But it is not for his role in “Tinsel” that he is most known. It was the 2012 movie directed by Desmond Elliot and produced by Ini Edo and co. and starring a powerful list of stars even in 2012 level. Genevieve Nnaji, Ramsey Nouah, Ini Edo, Monalisa Chinda, Beverly Naya, Uti Nwachukwu, a former Mr Nigeria Bryan Okwara, Okon Lagos, Uru Eke, etc graced the cast list of the show.

Despite being new to the industry, Alexx Ekubo shone on set and won the award of Best Supporting Actor at two separate Nollywood awards in 2013.

Alexx Ekubo has gone on to appear in dozens of roles. He is mostly not the lead character of these roles and sometimes play passing roles were his looks and charisma are supposed to light up the screen like electricity and they do, some of the time. Some of the movies Ekubo featured in include the terrible and overhyped “Bling Lagosians”, Funke Akindele’s political comedy “Your Excellency” where he was opposite Toni Tones, “Champagne”, “Gold Diggin”, “Lagos Cougar” with Yvonne Nelson, “Diary of a Lagos Girl”, etc (no need going on, there are at least 100 films/shows to his name). How could we forget “AY’s Crib”? (a web series by AY Makun which also has Big Brother’s Venita in the cast).

Alexx Ekubo was said to be the name the makers of “Living in Bondage” sequel first considered for the role of Nnamdi Okeke but they decided to go for a fresher and younger face and Swanky JKA got the role. I don’t think missing out of this role would keep this star awake at night as Ekubo’s fame and screen worth have remained unshakable.

Relationship: Is Alexx Ekubo married? Is he gay?

Let’s start with the latter question. Alexx Ekubo is not gay. This rumour claims that he is gay and that his partner was Uti Nwachukwu. Nwachukwu has come out to deny this and we won’t even bother with quotes as we don’t believe the rumours in the first place. The guys were very closed and had nothing more than bromance. In fact, mentioning this here is just because this issue has remained on the web. The claim of homosexuality is rubbish.

Ekubo is not married and is rather secretive with his private affairs which is one of the reason the gay rumor gained undue growth. Well, actually he was never always secretive. Up to 2015, he was vocal about his singlehood, saying in an interview with Village Square TV, “I am single for now.”

From 2016 and peaking in 2017, he was said to be in a serious relationship with Fancy Acholonu, a top model. This is gossip of course but it is authoritative gossip as it was reported by Linda Ikeji. We are inclined to believe. But since the relationship was “serious” in 2017 and nothing has happened in 2020, we think something serious had happened to their relationship. Or not.

But Ekubo is not involved with any woman we know of. And there is no need thinking that he may be married secretly because he is not. This we know for sure. No child, too, known.
